Cairns Best Bike Rides
The UCI Mountain Bike World Championships are held every year right here in Cairns at the world famous Smithfield Bike Track. They’re just around the corner and we’ve been seeing a few extra cyclists around town so we’ve picked their brains and done our research to find the best bike rides around Cairns and the Far North. Of course the best one is right on our doorstep (we might be slightly biased here!) with over 10km to cycle paths to explore right from the park we’re perfectly situated for any type of rider whether you’re a weekend cruiser or something more serious.
- We’ll start off with the relaxing Cairns Esplanade circuit. Take in the iconic sights and sounds of Cairns including the Botanic Gardens on an early morning ride. Around a 10km flat loop.
- Get your blood pumping at the site of the World Mountain Biking Champs at Smithfield, only 15 minutes drive from the park. There are over 60km of trails available, suitable for all levels of rider.
- Port Douglas holds a couple of options. For serious mountain bikers, head to The Bump Track which includes steep drops into streams and about 6 km of bumps. For a more leisurely ride head to Four Mile Beach where the hard sands are perfect for riding and the coconut fringed beaches promise spectacular views.
- For those looking for a challenging hill climb, we have a couple of local gems. The Kuranda Range is a popular spot for cyclists although it is narrow so be sure to go early in the morning. Lake Morris Road is a generally quieter option and offers some fabulous views of Cairns. Both are long and very steep so take some water and prepare to stop for a couple of rests!
